New York spot gold fell $34.90 Tuesday, closing at $3,300.50. The TSX Venture Exchange shed 5.71 points to 751.91 while the TSX gold index shrank 23.48 points to 487.43. Canada's gold miners swam in a sea of red today. SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM) fell $1.60 to $16.79 on 866,000 shares in silence, while equally mute Iamgold Corp. (IMG) fell 80 cents to $9.44 on 7.81 million shares. Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (WPM) kept them company with a $7.87 drop to $118.65 on 1.5 million shares.
Among the noisemakers today was Stuart McDonald's Taseko Mines Ltd. (TKO). It rallied 22 cents to $4.70 on 8.57 million shares on word that it has begun the environmental assessment process for its Yellowhead project in central British Columbia. Mr. McDonald, president and chief executive officer, applauded the company's submission of an initial project description as "a significant milestone" for the permitting process, adding that he and his crew have "already begun to engage stakeholders and will ensure that the development of Yellowhead is in line with environmental and social expectations."
