The National Post reports in its driving section that the Jeff Bezos-backed Slate Auto has revealed its first vehicle -- a bare-bones electric two-seat regular cab pickup truck that can be converted into a five-seat SUV. A Driving.ca dispatch to the Post says the SUV will be offered in traditional square-back and fastback models, along with an open-air model with no hardtop or windows. Inside, it is minimalist to the max. The company's disruptive mantra is not difficult to grasp: If you simplify "the manufacturing process and unnecessary content," it will reduce cost and increase reliability. Slate says to expect the price to come in under $20,000 (U.S.) after U.S. federal incentives, or roughly $27,500 (U.S.) without, making it the most affordable EV on the road in North America. Slate Auto calls this barebones no-frills version its "blank Slate." It arrives with crank windows and not a single touchscreen -- a smart phone mount and charger takes care of the infotainment side. There are, however, proper knobs for the climate control system. Up front there's a frunk, with a traditional box out back that has a 635-kilogram payload capacity. Customers will be able to spruce up this basic buy with some 100 accessories.
