The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Cohere has launched a cost-effective artificial intelligence model called Command A, developed with less than $30-million (Canadian) in resources, significantly lower than competitors, some of whom spend over $100-million (U.S.) on similar models. The Globe's Joe Castaldo writes that evaluations indicate that Command A performs comparably or better than leading models from Microsoft-backed OpenAI and DeepSeek in tasks such as coding, technical inquiries and customer service. Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst stated that the company achieved its results by focusing on building models tailored for business customers rather than trying to create all-encompassing technology. He emphasized, "We're training it to be good at the things that our customers want," which has led to greater efficiency compared with competitors. Companies such as OpenAI and Amazon-backed Anthropic are trying to develop artificial general intelligence or AGI. To get there, these companies believe more computational power is needed. Cohere utilized 2,000 GPUs for Command A's first phase. Customers can deploy the model on their infrastructure with just two GPUs, while other models may need up to 32.
