New York spot gold fell $18.10 to $1,193.10 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 12.76 points to 680.99 while the TSX Gold Index slid 4.71 points to 170.99. Canadian gold miners took a beating today. Alio Gold Inc. (ALO), down 32 cents Friday, dropped another 21 cents to $1.20 on 1.29 million shares today. Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG) fell 58 cents to $8.20 on 933,000 shares.

Maureen Watson and Greg Neeld's Hawkeye Gold and Diamond Inc. (HAWK), up two cents to eight cents on 222,000 shares, has begun a first phase of work this year at its McBride gold project, in the Golden Triangle district of northwestern British Columbia. The work includes geological mapping and the collection of about 40 stream sediment samples, nearly 500 soil samples and 200 rock samples. (The first two items on the sampling list are promotional yawners, but the final item could produce assays with enough gold to catch the market's eye.) Further news, says Hawkeye, "will be forthcoming." (Like all Howe Street explorers, the word will come forth faster if the news is good.)
