New York spot gold rose $4.10 to $1,794.90 on Friday. The TSX-V inched 0.25 point higher to 911.46, while the TSX gold index added 0.16 point to 274.12. Most Canadian gold miners moved little today. Newmont Corp. (NGT) rose 40 cents to $75.11 on 212,000 shares while Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) added 17 cents to $11.44 on 618,000 shares. Sandstorm Gold Ltd. (SSL) went the other way, slipping four cents to $7.13 on 331,000 shares. None of these companies had news today -- today being the first market Friday of 2022 and all -- and of those that did have news, the market reaction was predictably modest.
David Strang's Ero Copper Corp. (ERO) fell 11 cents to $18.17 on 182,000 shares. The company has updated its reserve and resource estimates, including healthy increases at its NX gold mine in Brazil. Ero now lists a reserve of 1.1 million tonnes averaging 8.64 grams of gold per tonne, a total of nearly 307,000 ounces. It is a modest sum, but Ero grew the reserve by over 62,000 ounces despite the mine producing nearly 40,000 ounces last year.
