Stock Pickers said buy 18 times from September, 2001, to July, 2013, at prices ranging from $8.45 to $27 (the stock split 2 for 1 in September, 2002, April, 2004, and April, 2005). Assuming a $1,000 investment for each of the 18 buys, the $18,000 position is now worth $7,144. Reitmans owns 600 women's clothing stores across Canada. In the quarter ended Feb. 2, 2019, it lost $8.9-million or 14 cents a share, compared with a loss of $1.9-million or three cents a share in the same period a year earlier. The most recent quarter's loss was affected by an $8.5-million decrease in the value of the company's holdings of marketable securities, compared with a $2-million gain in the year-ago period. As for sales, these dropped to $226.9-million from $264.2-million, in part reflecting the net closure of 42 stores. Stock Pickers says Reitmans is to be commended for its willingness to close underperforming stores. As well, Reitmans has a strong balance sheet and a seemingly safe dividend with a generous yield of 6 per cent. Even so, given the intense competition in the clothing market, the company's overall sales outlook is unclear. Hold.
