The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was an upbeat 72-59-169 as the TSX Venture Exchange lost 1.84 points to 540.76 and polished diamond prices edged upward. Matthew Wood's Five Star Diamonds Ltd. (STAR) returned to trading for the first time since March with a whimper, dropping 2.5 cents to 4.5 cents on 5,000 shares. The stock had bene halted pending a now terminated spin-off of its Brazilian diamond projects.

Dev Shetty's Fura Gems Inc. (FURA), down one-half cent to 17 cents on 11,000 shares, has sold 106.75 million shares at 25 cents, raising $26.7-million in a first tranche of a private placement that it has been working on since mid-May. Late in June, Mr. Shetty, president and chief executive officer, said that the placement, which was to raise $30.3-million, was "oversubscribed," thanks to Lord of Seven Hills Holdings FZE of United Arab Emirates, which agreed to buy 123.66 million shares for $30.9-million. As a result, Fura said in mid-August that it was increasing the placement to $33.34-million.
